For a British brew, Bass is remarkably popular in France. The company was one of the world’s first to take international brand marketing seriously. The red triangle has been prominently displayed as its logo since the early 19th century and was so popular, it occasionally appeared in art and literature. Over 40 of Picasso’s paintings feature a Bass ale logo, as well as Édouard Manet’s famous 1882 painting ‘A Bar at Folies-Bergère’. After the high arts, the low soon followed, resulting in lots of merchandise like this rather heavy pencil holder.
