In 1960 France signed the ‘Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others’, a United Nations Convention which basically banned prostitution in France altogether. Visiting prostitutes became illegal as did owning a brothel, prostitutes could no longer rent a room for work either. The artist of this lovely painting clearly regrets the death of prostitution as he or she decided to portray this well dressed prostitute as an angel rising upwards towards the heavens.
