The gesture of an outstretched hand, palm facing up is a universally recognised symbol for begging. It’s unclear whether this smoky brown glass sculpture of a begging hand has a function beyond pure aesthetic pleasure. That said, given that an empty hand generally signifies having nothing, or being in need, perhaps its purpose is to serve as a gentle reminder to the owner to be grateful for what they do have. Being life size, it certainly makes for a solid paper weight.
