Sending someone a lock of one’s hair is considered to be a sign of devotion and love. It was usually a gift from one lover to another when they were going to be separated due to work or travel. It serves as a physical reminder of the sight and smell of a loved one. Or, perhaps, an unwelcome little surprise from a secret lover, breaking up a seemingly peaceful marriage. It is also said that the person who owns a lock of your hair, also owns you. There is also a belief that this is where the expression ‘who’s your daddy?’ originates from.
