COMMUNIST WORKING SHIRT

ROMANIA EA/RO/0029

A humble working shirt produced by Crinul, one of Bucarest’s oldest knitwear companies, originally founded in 1899 as Societatea de Tricotaje Bucuresti. In 1948 the Communist regime of Romania ordered the nationalisation of many businesses. This included the workshop of Crinul. This wave of nationalisation was part of a large effort by the state to plan the national economy, intending to defend the working people against exploitation. The striking colour of the shirt seems perfect for one such blue collar worker, though the tag remains unremoved and the shirt pristine.
