ALBUM OF BUILDING AND DESTRUCTION HOUSE

GERMANY - 1952-1967 EA/DE/0010
https://europearchive.eu/country-index/germany/

This beautiful and poetic album spans 15 years starting with the introduction of a large wooden summerhouse at the ‘Karlslust Kolonie’ allotments. We follow a large family as they rebuild, from wood to bricks, and the subsequent years of joy they share there with extended family and friends. Over the pages we notice new fruit trees, changing neighbours and even the switch from black and white to colour photography. The final pages of the album reveal to us that the allotments must be demolished. An image of the remains—rubble surrounded by trees—the type-written captions reads, ‘there was a house there, the forest is a silent witness’.
