During the 1980s several new art movements rose up in Slovenia. The most famous one among them was the ‘Neue Slowenische Kunst’ (New Slovenian Art), a.k.a. NSK, a provocative collective that addressed the complicated relationship between Slovenia and Nazi Germany. In an ironic way. Eastern European style. Go figure. NSK art works can be described as totalitarian kitsch, and irony is an important tool for NSK artists. This peaceful depiction of a Swiss lake with a couple of swans, however, feels like a very sincere homage, with not a single smart Nazi joke in sight.
