AN ANTLER CRUCIFIX

Christ crucified on a cross made of deer antlers, as odd as it seems, these kind of crucifixes are not so uncommon. Although there is no clear tradition from which it can be traced, the story of Saint Hubertus seems a likely suspect. Hubertus was hunting in the forest chasing a stag, when it turned to him and Hubertus saw Jesus on the cross between the deer’s antlers. He heard God’s voice telling him to convert and from this point on Hubertus became the patron saint of hunters—also of mathematicians, metalworkers and opticians. He has become a symbol for humane hunting and having compassion for animals.
