BOTTLE WITH BALLERINA

1980s EA/FR/0096

Drinking often goes together with music and dancing, and this bottle combines exactly those things. The Ballerina bottles were produced by Amsterdam distillery Bols between 1957 and 1978 and were an instant hit in the Netherlands and beyond. The tiny ballerina could have either a red or a white skirt and she danced to the tune of a Waltz: An der schönen blauen Donau. She danced in a sea of apricot brandy, crème de menthe or banana liquor (those were what the bottles were produced for), but gained most fame when she danced in something called Gold Liquor or ‘bridal tears’: a type of liquor featuring dazzling shimmers of gold leaf. Around 1970 Bols sold an equally dazzling number of 60.000 bottles a year, of which 16.000 were shipped to the United states. Since the bottles of Gold Liquor were a popular wedding gift, it is likely that she danced at many, many weddings.
