French Polynesia is a part of overseas France and consists of 118 islands and atolls. This beautiful spot on earth unfortunately became a nuclear testing ground for the French Army in the 1960s after France’s former testing ground in Algeria was closed down. Mururoa and its sister atoll Fangataufa became the site of extensive nuclear testing, as well as the scene of numerous protests by various boats, including the Rainbow Warrior, a Greenpeace ship that was bombed later by operatives of the French intelligence service (DGSE). A tragic history that the boys in these pictures seem blissfully unaware of.
