CALENDAR HOLDER

THE NETHERLANDS EA/NL/0068

Writing one’s name on the family birthday calendar: a true right of passage for any guest to a Dutch home. Though often a simple calendar hung in the toilet – to ensure daily check-ins – this calendar holder is painted rather beautifully. Depicting a woman and girl overlooking a boat on the IJsselmeer, as suggested by the name Spakenburg, a fishing village in the centre of the Netherlands. The rather particular style of dress, traditional to the area, is still worn daily by a handful of women and during festivities by the rest of the locals. Unfortunately, research indicates the dress will likely go extinct in about 10 years, as younger people opt for more modern clothing.
