This handcrafted basket, showing a beautiful sheen provided by the coffee packaging it was woven from, was made by the hands of a prisoner in Denmark. Prison art, art created by prisoners while incarcerated, has historically been a tool of brief escapism or documentation amongst the prison population. Creating art and dedicated art programs have been shown to improve the behaviour and mental health of prisoners, causing the practice to be encouraged across prisons in the Western world. Seeing as Denmark’s government banned life-serving prisoners from establishing new romantic relationships in 2022, the need for an outlet seems inevitable.
