Zlín is the centre of the Czech shoe industry, which was founded in 1913 by Thomas Bata. Under the Bata family, the city grew into an almost self-sufficient factory community. After World War II the communists took over management of Zlín, all of its factories and in 1949 renamed the city Gottwaldov, after the first communist president of Czechoslovakia, Klement Gottwald. After the Velvet Revolution in 1989, the city’s name was changed back to Zlín and Thomas J. Bata came to visit the town immediately to establish a new branch of his company there.
