Life in the trenches was extremely slow-paced. Soldiers waiting for the next rifling or bombardment to happen had lots of spare time at hand, so many of them translated their fears and sorrows into beauty: paintings, poems, songs and even decorated shells. The contrast between the sinuous lines of the engraved pattern on the container and the ability of the content to kill cause a countercircuit which is at once fascinating and spooky.
