ITALY EA/IT/0044

Short for ex voto suscepto, or “from the vow made”, these types of paintings were often made after the offeror had survived some great danger. In this case, it appears there was a shipwreck in 1868 on rough seas. Several hints amongst the waves and clouds insinuate revival, fortunately. On the left, the acronym P.G.R. “Per Grazia Ricevuta” or “By Grace Received”, stands for a saying often linked to the acknowledgement of a divine gift. In the bottom left, it reads “La Fenice” or “The Phoenix”, followed by several names. Lastly, the Virgin Mary looks down from the heavens, cradling Jesus after his descent from the cross in the classic pietà pose, conveying a theme of mourning before resurrection.
