This World War II film about a concentration camp could be a TV special… Or the dramatic movie ‘Army of Shadows’ (‘L’armée des ombres), written and directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and starring Lino Ventura and Simone Signoret, shot in France between 1967-1968. The film was not well received and consequently was not shown in many French cinemas. In the mid-1990s ‘Cahiers du cinéma’ published a reappraisal of the film and Melville’s work in general, which led to its restoration and re-release in 2006. Subsequently, the film received lots of critical praise in the U.S. and ended up in many critics’ top ten lists.
