About 20,000 people died in Croatia’s four year war of independence, during the breakup of Yugoslavia. And some 2000 people were murdered four years later, in 1995, during Operation Storm. Just like most scenes of carnage are now overgrown with grass and shrubs, this fin-stabilized mortar shell today serves as a harmless supporter of flowers. Upon exploding it had an effective kill radius of 35 meters, or 115 feet, wiping out all living creatures within range; people, animals and flowers. The Croatian countryside is filled with potential vases like this. Some of them still live and dangerous, but most beyond death and open to new opportunities.
