FRAMED HAND-PAINTED SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPH

1950s EA/HU/0057

In an attempt to create more realistic images in a pre-colour photography era, it was common to hand-colour monochrome photographs. The first examples are attributed to Swiss artist Johann Baptist Isenring, who used a mixture of gum arabic and pigments to colour daguerreotypes with heat. This framed hand-painted photograph of a school boy from Hungary is an example of this now vintage habit.
