GLASS DOG LIQUOR BOTTLE

FRANCE - 1950s EA/FR/0029

These dog shaped bottles were introduced during the 1950s by the French glass manufacturer Durand. The bottles with their doggy design originally contained various flavoured syrups, marketed at children and empty bottles were often saved for decorative purposes. The poodle was at the height of fashion during the 1950s and is widely associated with French culture, however, it’s actually a German duck hunting dog. Etymologically ‘poodle’ has its roots in the low German word ‘puddeln’, meaning to splash in water, cognate with the English ‘puddle’.
