This Romanian wedding portrait is a typical example of a Monidło: Before colored photography became democratized, ‘hand coloring’ was a common practice to bring photos to live by overpainting them with watercolors. In Eastern European countries, this practice continued into the 80s, with hand-colored wedding portraits becoming an own genre called ‘Monidło’. Monidłos are infamous for overexaggerating desirable features, such as the luscious manes of bride and groom in this exemplary. Although the bride is putting on a rather morose look, marriage is an aspiration of most Romanian women as remaining a bachelorette has been heavily stigmatized down to the present day.
