‘Stickers or it didn’t happen’ was the maxim of any wealthy traveler between the 1870s and 1960s. Back in the day, grand hotels handed out their own branded stickers for visitors to put on their suitcases. Officially, this was done to ensure the safe arrival of luggage at the right hotel. In practice, these stickers had a very symbiotic purpose: while they served as a status symbol for the traveler, the hotel got free publicity. But when mass transit democratized travelling, the area of luggage stickers came to an end. Since hotels hired artists to illustrate beautiful motives, especially Art-Deco, they are still a popular collectible, like these ones from Stockholm.
