LABORATORY SAMPLES IN ORIGINAL BOX

THE NETHERLANDS EA/NL/0064

Mysterious black dots mark these petri dishes, perhaps serving as a guide for inoculation – a type of microbial connect-the-dots. The company distributing these samples, Salm en Kipp, was founded in at the end of the 19th century by G.B. Salm. He was convinced the 20th century would ring in a new era of wide-spread experimentation and was lauded for his rather modern marketing techniques. In the early 1970s, modern problems were also what brought the company to move from a stately building on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam to their current location in Breukelen: parking problems.
