‘Progress means killing the past.’ When the production of Super 8 films came to an end, lots of people who really liked the medium were really disappointed. None more so than the maker of this particular Super 8 film with the voices of a certain Betty and Jacques on it. On a piece of paper accompanying this reel of film he wrote: ‘The videocamera won the battle. It’s horrible, but progress means killing the past.’ This dramatic statement raises profound questions. Do we erase part of our history because the devices that record it become obsolete? Or do we simply forget history, because we are too busy recording our present?
