In 1964, Ottó Foky founded TV Maci (“TV Little Bear”). Inspired by the puppet-animations of Czech director Jiří Trnka, the popular TV Maci becomes the mas-cot of the Hungarian children’s TV program Esti mese (“Bed Time Story”). Under so called “Goulash Communism” in 1960s Hungary, car-toons were produced which hinted at the country’s social issues or offered an escape from these. This accele-rated the rise of the cartoon series of which Maci became a popular one.
