Phillumeny, from the Greek root of phil- “loving” and Latin lumen “light”, is the hobby of collecting match-related objects, such as matchboxes, matchbooks and matches themselves. A popular hobby, especially following World War 2, and often taken as a souvenir from travels abroad. The phillumenist responsible for this specific collection, has focused on match-coverings with an elephant in their design, many hailing from India. Though mass production and more bland designs have reduced interest in the hobby, the internet still fosters a dedicated community.
