When this piece was found, it still had some ash in it – as it was used as an ashtray. To the French, the clog is a symbol of peasants (you know, those hardworking, salt-of-the-earth folks who toil in the fields). We may conclude that such an act – dumping your burnt tobacco into the clog – can be viewed as pretty disrespectful… The clog, or should we say ashtray, is made of bronze.
