PAINTING TRAINSTATION CAMAIORE

ITALY EA/IT/0045

An idyllic scene as townsfolk stand watch the steam train leave its station in Camaiore towards Viareggio, along the north-western coast of Italy. Once an important connection and ambitious plan, the project faced quite some challenges. From its high construction costs to the funeral carriage of the assassinated king Umberto I passing by on its inauguration in 1900. The station no longer exists, though details from this painting and postcards can help us estimate its location on the town square now lined with pizza restaurants.
