PORTFOLIO OF A GRAPHIC DESIGNER

FRANCE - 1950 EA/FR/0044

Graphic design used to be manual labour; meticulously drawing on paper sheets that had to lie perfectly still. And trying not to sweat or drool while doing it. It took real craftsmanship and a very steady hand to design a product, a logo or an ad in the fifties. They used transparent sheets of paper like we use layers in Photoshop today. Their materials are now leftovers, unwanted, of no use, and in a way so are the incredibly talented graphic designers of old. So, the next time you see someone painting a logo on a shop window or cafe by hand, please pay a salute to an almost closed chapter of graphic design history.
