Every European has probably seen a variation of this Christian motif before: Carved into sculptures, chiseled into gravestones and even tattooed onto countless bodies, the praying hands image is part of the cultural identity. This is a famous case of art imitating art, with the original being a sketch from 1508 by Albrecht Dürer. About 500 years ago, he doodled ‘Praying Hands’ as a reference for a much larger altar painting. Little did he know that this very sketch would go viral and become his most replicated piece of art, inspiring also the wooden devotional wall-piece at hand.
