REMEMBRANCE PLATE OF STEEL FACTORY

1980s EA/FR/0095

The town of Longwy was the beacon of French steel production in the early 1960s, until the factory Usinor Longwy was shut down during the crisis of the Lorraine basin steel industry in 1979. The closure of the factory left thousands of people jobless, but at least gave them this plate, produced in their honour. This plate may have hung on the wall of someone who once was proud to be part of this local economy. Or perhaps it was sold by someone who felt exactly the opposite. Either way, this plate commemorates the life of an industry that -at least in Longwy – was doomed to die, right before we entered the 80s.
