SCRAPBOOK IN A DIARY

1970s EA/IT/0070

Some diaries are meant for your eyes only. Or for those of your lover. This scrapbook in a diary from 1979 tells the steamy love story of a girl named Tina and a boy named Lucio, who probably made this scrapbook. Tina and Lucio probably didn’t know or think about it, but with their scrapbook, they took part in a tradition that started in the 15th century: back then, letters, poems, recipes, quotes and other memories started being kept in so-called ‘commonplace books’ – scrapbooks avant la lettre, filled up by friends and visitors. One can wonder, however, if the kindnesses in those books even vaguely resembled Lucio and Tina’s messages. Were they as ‘in love with sex’ as Tina was back in the 70s?
