Collector’s mania is real in The Netherlands. So much so that for collectors of sugar bags there is an actual term, namely ‘glycophilie’ in French or ‘sucrology’. In The Netherlands, the country of origin of this collector’s album, from the 1950’s onwards it became a must for businesses to have sugar bags made with their logo and business information on them. By the 1960’s it had turned into a complete National Craze to collect these bags. By 1995 the ‘Vereniging Vrienden van de Suikerzak’ or ‘Association Friends of the Sugar Bag‘ was brought to life. The years after were formative for the association as it grew a more serious character. In the year 2000 the association ‘Club van Suikerzakjesverzamelaars in Nederland’ or ‘Club of Sugar Bags Collectors in The Netherlands’ was established and is still going strong: www.suikerzak.nl, the noun stands for ‘sugar bag’.
