SCULPTURE MADE OF BROKEN PLATES

THE NETHERLANDS EA/NL/0059

While a broken mirror results in 7 years of bad luck, a broken plate is a symbol of good things to come. In Denmark, on New Year’s Eve, people throw their broken plates at friends’ homes for good luck in the new year. In Greece, people have been smashing their plates to signal the end of something, and the beginning of good things. In a similar way, the plates that were broken here symbolize the end of the plates being used as plates, and the beginning of something great: a broken plate sculpture. (Donation from Erik Fens)
