In communist Bulgaria, dancing was a serious matter. The biennial Varna International Ballet Competition, founded in 1964, is one of the fiercest competitions in the world and spans two weeks. Bulgarian disco lasted almost a decade, with Western hits and Bulgarian translations becoming extremely popular with Bulgaria’s youth. Posters of pop stars like Mimi Ivanova, Georgi Hristov, Trik, Tramway No. 5, Blagovest and Svetoslav Argirovi adorned the bedrooms of many teenagers. Sadly, the golden age of Bulgarian disco ended with the fall of the Berlin Wall, yet its legacy will live on forever.
