VASE MADE OUT OF A PIG’S STOMACH

Lithuania - 1970s EA/LT/0002

At 75cm high, this hand shaped vase made from a pig’s bladder/stomach looks to have come from a very big piggy. This one was collected in Lithuania, but the practice of using pigs’ bladders and stomachs is age old and world wide. Across much of Europe’s more rural areas it was typical to clean, dry and stretch the stomach or bladder after a pig was slaughtered. The dried organs were then used in various ways, some practical, some decorative and some that check both boxes.
