Originating from Germany in the 19th century, the so-called “wall cover” gained great popularity in Hungary from the early 20th century. Especially after kitchens became increasingly smoke-free, making their clean walls suitable for decoration. The moral life lessons, romantic messages, sayings, or free interpretations were often the result of the diligence of the woman of the house. This one says: “I need someone who doesn’t go to the pub. Eats his dinner at home and appreciates his family.” Mostly hung at a central place in the kitchen, anyone who would read it clearly got the message.
